Bakken (2003) notes the similarity of this genus with Rullierinereis Pettibone, 1971 and Nicon Kinberg, 1865, but notes several differences pertaining to parapodial lobes and chaetae. It was also considered to be similar to Laeonereis Hartman, 1945, Kinberginereis Pettibone, 1971, Olganereis Hartmann-Schroder, 1971 and Websterinereis Pettibone, 1971. The precise relationship of Typhlonereis with these other genera, and whether its reported differences constitute apomorphies is yet to be determined.
