Etymology According to Chamberlin the genus name Podarmus is derived from the Greek words meaning foot and peg, referring to the cylindrical process borne on the posterior side of the parapodium. 'Pous' 'podos' is foot (masculine). A likely transliterated match for the 'armus' word could not be found. An exact equivalent for the species name 'ploa' which Chamberlin uses indicating it is transliterated Greek for 'floating' could not be found either, although 'plotos' masculine is floating, swimming . However, Pettibone (1966: 199) states that Podarmus is masculine. [details]

Editor's comment No further work appears to have been done on the poorly known Podarmus pelagic polynoids since the article of Pettibone (1966). This might be expected to change as midwater pelagic polynoids will be more frequently collected and seen via divers, ROVs, and standard plankton nettings. Or possibly they are already being recorded under another name.
