Nomenclature Pre-Linnaean usage (thus unavailable to nomenclature) listed in synonymy by McIntosh (1922:224) as Penicillus marinus. In fact Rondelet has "Penicillo marino". Rondelet's 'Penicillus' was used as a genus by subsequent workers. Linnaeus (1767:1268) did not use the name but included a referral to Rondelet's description in his Sabella penicillus synonymy. Hartman catalogue (p.554) records McIntosh's usage as "Penicillus marinus Rondelet in McIntosh, 1922" and refers the name to Sabella penicillus. See also Penicillus Guettard, 1770 [details]
