Status Fauchald dismisses the Linnaeus name of 'Nereis gigantea' as indeterminable (although it is referring to an amphinomid named by Seba as Millepoda marina amboensis), The unpublished usage in the Paris museum of 'Nereis gigantea' for a Eunicid surely could not be confused with it? The earlier Linnaean name probably has no connection to Lamarck's eventual naming of Leodice gigantea
Nereis gigantea Linnaeus, 1758 has priority over Aphrodita carunculata Pallas 1766, but probably has never been used recombined within Amphinomidae, thus prevailing usage can be maintained. Savigny (1822) moved the entity to Amphinomidae, and used Pallas's 'carunculata' rather than Linnaeus's 'gigantea'. [details]
