Homonymy Sabella picta Verrill, 1885 is a junior primary homonym to Sabella picta Krøyer, 1856. Neither remain in Sabella but nevertheless Sabella picta and any subsequent combinations are invalid. A replacement name is needed. Tovar‐Hernández (2007: 545) used Chone picta as a valid combination, but this is not possible under the Code. [details]

Taxonomy Bush (1905: 216) does not recombine Sabella picta into Chone, but she goes close. She suggests the species belongs in her genus Metachone (created for Metachone mollis and a genus later regarded as not distinct from Chone). She writes that "The species described and figured by Verrill (1885) as Sabella picta is a Metachone." As she does not use the name "Metachone picta" we cannot record that combination, Hartman (1942: 87) does not mention Sabella picta, but she transfers Metachone mollis to Chone. In a separate 1942 article Hartman synonymizes Sabella picta with Chone infundibuliformis Kroyer. These two associations with Chone might be why she later in her catalogue (1959) refers Sabella picta Verrill to Chone as a recombination. [details]
