Etymology Not specified in the original description. The specific epithet flabellum is a Latin noun meaning 'fan', and it refers clearly to the fan-shaped structure of the tubes near their mouth: "The most characteristic feature, however, in the structure of this tube is the fan-shaped expansion of filaments at its upper orifice. This orifice is circular, and has on its dorsal surface a projecting lip or kind of hood (fig. 2), which extends beyond the mouth for a short distance, whilst from its ventral side springs another lip or hood (fig. 1), which quickly expands into a fan-shaped tuft of horny-looking filaments" (Baird, 1865: 157). Status The species was stated to be a nomen nudum by Hartman (1959: 524), which is clearly incorrect. Probably Hartman wanted to state nomen dubium, as she adds "Perhaps Lanice sp.". Later Holthe (1986: 152) repeated the same error. [details]

Taxonomy Terebella flabellum was based on the description of the tubes of the animal, and not on the animal itself, which was unknown, according to Baird (1865: 157): "The animal is as yet unknown, but the tubes are sufficiently remarkable to merit a description." Though, the tubes upon which the description was based are eligible as the name-bearing types of the species, according to article 72.5 of the ICZN: "Only the following are eligible to be a name-bearing type, or part of a name-bearing type, of a nominal species-group taxon: 72.5.1. an animal, or any part of an animal, or an example of the fossilized work of an animal, or of the work of an extant animal if the name based on it was established before 1931 [...]." Classification Ehlers (1871) renamed this Lanice tube structure as a sponge, Aulorhipis elegans. However, Ernst Haeckel (1873, p.246 in "On calcisponges ...") commented that "Of the supposed new form of sponge [Aulorhipis elegans), upon which Ehlers founds his whole argument, he knows nothing except the horny skeleton, no trace of soft parts. But this horny skeleton, which encloses foreign bodies, is a solid cord attached to a worm-tube at one end, and the dichotomously divided branches of which spread out like a fan in one plane. It is very probable that this skeleton does not belong to a sponge at all". It looks like Ehlers was thinking the tube was named Terebella flabellum, so he could name the attached sponge Aulorhipis elegans, but the flaw is it isn't an attached sponge - it's all part of the tube. Etymology Not specified in the original description. [details]
Taxonomy Terebella flabellum was based on the description of the tubes of the animal, and not on the animal itself, which was unknown, according to Baird (1865: 157): "The animal is as yet unknown, but the tubes are sufficiently remarkable to merit a description."
