Sponges constitute an important and dominant component of the marine benthos and are therefore an excellent model group for such investigations. The diversity and distribution of intertidal marine sponges collected from rocky shores of Ratnagiri coast during two years. A total 12 species were identified belonging to Demospongiae class, 8 orders and 10 families were recorded from Ratnagiri coast. The present study revealed that Alawa and Wayangani have greater sponge diversity than the Undi. Lower littoral zone had high abundance of sponge than the middle and upper littoral zone. This information has illustrated that the rocky shores along the Ratnagiri coast of Maharashtra can harbour a diverse array of sponge species. And it would be helpful as a baseline data to further explore on the possibility of ecological value and their conservation.
