Nomenclature Pettibone (1970:2, 1992:616) treated Leanira laevis McIntosh, 1874 as a nomen nudum, whereas Hartman (1965) catalogue supplement regarded it as a homonym (senior to Leanira laevis McIntosh, 1885, a much later 're-use' of the epithet for a different species from a different locality). Strictly Hartman may be more correct as McIntosh 1874 does weakly characterize the name by comparing it with other taxa, and in 1876 assigns the name and specimens to Leanira hystricis Ehlers, 1874, but accepting Pettibone's view avoids instability arising from her later usages relating to Leanira laevis McIntosh, 1885.
