Nomenclature Nereis willeyi Day is a replacement name for Neanthes capensis Willey, 1904, as Day wished to downgrade Neanthes to a subgenus of Nereis or maybe even a junior synonym of Nereis, where the recombination Nereis (Perinereis) capensis (Kinberg) would conflict with it. It is odd that Day (1934) replaces the name but doesn't use Neanthes as a subgenus. In his 1967 monograph he does use Nereis (Neanthes) willeyi. [details]

Day here states that Nereis (Neanthes) willeyi was a new name for Nereis (Neanthes) capensis Willey, 1904. However, Willey's new species was Neanthes willeyi, and Day has here recombined the name in Nereis without indicating it is a recombination.
