Type locality South Japan, Pacific Ocean. The exact locality is not known. The type material of Nereis mictodonta was obtained by Dr. A. v. Roretz, from Austria but who lived in Japan for years. According to Marenzeller (1879: 109), Dr. A. v. Roretz collected his samples in the region of Yokohama (Pacific coast of Honshu), and at several points of the islands of ''Kiuschiu'' (= Kyushu) and Shikoku, both in south Japan. However, most of the collection details of the material were missing: ''Herr Dr. A. v. Roretz hielt sich gleichfalls in Yokohama und an mehreren Punkten der Inseln Kiuschiu und Shikoku auf, leider fehlten aber meist bei den einzelnen Objecten nähere Angaben.'' [details]
