Taxonomy Hornell misspells Sabella pavonina as S. pavonia when he creates a new variety 'bicoronata' for Sabella specimens from Hilbre Island (at the mouth of the estuary of the River Dee, not far from Liverpool). The misspelling is repeated at least three times. Ewer (1946) confirms Hornell's placement of variety 'bicoronata' at variety level (not a distinct species). Knight-Jones & Perkins (1998) include S. pavonia bicoronata in the synonymy of Sabella pavonina. They make no comments on the name. [details]
