From editor or global species database
Validity This combination is a junior primary homonym of Spongia pertusa Esper, 1794, now accepted as Hyattella pertusa. However, Hyatt’s name is not an available name (as it has a fourth name, ICZN art. 45.5). Van Soest (2024: 29) proposed to assign this material from the Caribbean region to Spongia (Spongia) anclotea De Laubenfels & Storr, 1958, of which Spongia pertusa sensu Van Soest 1978 is a synonym (cf. Van Soest et al. 2020: 45). Hyatt's variety was used by Lendenfeld, 1879 (as Spongia irregularis var. pertusa, and raised to species level as Spongia pertusa by Van Soest (1978: 13), but unavailable names cannot enter in homonymy. Esper's name cannot be a nomen oblitum in the sense of art. 23.9.1, as it was redescribed by Topsent in 1920. Van Soest (1978) included Spongia anclotea De Laubenfels & Storr, 1978 in the synonymy of Spongia pertusa Hyatt, 1877 and we follow this in assigning Hyatt's material. [details]
