The type species of Valdiviathyris Helmcke 1940, which is known only from one specimen, is considered to be a young craniaceid, closely related to, if not actually congeneric with, Ancistrocrania Dall. The family Valdiviathyridae Helmcke is regarded as a junior synonym of Craniidae Forbes.
