Recent and fossil (mid-Cenozoic) specimens of the brachiopod Valdiviathyris quenstedti Helmcke, 1940 are described from New Zealand. The unusual median processes of this genus are shown to be the attachment sites of the brachial protractor muscles. Valdiviathyris is compared with Ancistrocrania, Neoancistrocrania and Novocrania and is considered to be a valid separate genus in the family Craniidae.
