Taxonomic remark Bouillon et al. (1997) introduced the replacement name Hydractinia nagaoensis for Hydractinia uchidai Nagao, 1961 to avoid...
Taxonomic remark Bouillon et al. (1997) introduced the replacement name Hydractinia nagaoensis for Hydractinia uchidai Nagao, 1961 to avoid a secondary homonymy with Hydractinia uchidai (Yamada, 1947) as used in Bouillon et al. (1997).
Because Hydractinia uchidai (Yamada, 1947) is now accepted as Schuchertinia uchidai (Yamada, 1947), the secondary homonymy is resolved and Hydractinia uchidai Nagao, 1961 becomes valid again.
However, the correct genus of Hydractinia uchidai Nagao, 1961 has not been investigated by molecular techniques and it is currently (2023) unresolved to which genus it really belongs. To avoid future name confusions, it seems preferable continuing using the replacement name Hydractinia nagaoensis Bouillon, Medel & Peña Cantero, 1997, even though it might not be correct according to the ICZN.
