Nomenclature Ths species has long been known under the name Trivia pulex (Gray, 1827), which cannot be used because it is a primary homonym of Cypraea pulex Link, 1807. The earlier name Cypraea mediterranea Risso, 1826 has not been used until 2010 but is nomenclaturally available and its identity is clearly defined from the lectotype (Arnaud, 1977) as already noted by Schilder (1930) [details]

Synonymy Fehse & Grego (2008: p. 23, 25) considered Trivia spongicola Monterosato, 1923 as a synonym of Cypraea pulex but this is incompatible with its type locality in Sfax, Tunisia. [details]
