[summary] In this paper the author gives a taxonomic and biogeographical analysis of the Polychaeta fauna of the northern part of the Japan Sea on the basis of the rich collections made by the expeditions of the State Hydrological Institute in 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1932. Up to 256 Polychaeta species are already known from the Japan Sea. 36 per cent of that number are warm-water forms (subarctic, boreal, Indo-Pacific, Japanese and Californian); 23 per cent are arctic-boreal forms; 11 per cent — West Pacific forms (i. e., temperate, warm-water ones); 11 per cent endemic foms; 6 per cent cosmopolites; and only 10 per cent arctic forms (panarctic, high arctic and Kamchatkan). In general the Polychaeta fauna of the Japan Sea bears a warm-water (boreal) character. The author gives descriptions with figures of a number of new and rare species.
