Die vorliegende Arbeit beruht auf Untersuchung der im Hamburger Zoologischen Museum befindlichen reichen Bestände an Polychäten von der Küste Westafrikas zwischen Kap Verde und der Mündung des Oranje-Flusses, einschließlich der Guinea-Inseln. Das sehr umfangreiche Untersuchungsmaterial läßt sich nach den zwei in ihm vertretenen Faunengebieten natürlicherweise in einen südwestafrikanischen und einen tropisch-westafrikanischen Anteil zerlegen.

Die kleinere südwestafrikanische Sammlung besteht der Hauptsache nach aus dem im Jahre 1911 von Prof. W. Michaelsen auf der Hamburger deutsch-südwestafrikanischen Studienreise erbeuteten Material, dem sich noch einige Einzelfunde von anderen Sammlern hinzugesellen. Die südwestafrikanischen Polychäten wurden am Ebbestrande oder in geringer Tiefe, auch an Bojen, gesammelt, also im Bereich des engeren Litoralbezirks.

Die große tropisch-westafrikanische Sammlung, die zu den bedeutendsten Sammlungen westafrikanischer Meerestiere gehört, wird zum weitaus größten Teile von der gewaltigen Ausbeute Kapitän Hupfer's gebildet. Diese Sammlung, deren Wert im Gegensatz zu ihrem Umfange durch eine minder gute Erhaltung beeinträchtigt ist, wurde größtenteils so gewonnen, daß von dem genannten Sammler geeignete Gegenstände wie mit Algen, Bryozoen und Muscheln bewachsene Steine, Muschelklumpen und dgl. heimgebracht und im Museum von Prof. Michaelsen auf die an und in ihnen sitzenden Polychäten und anderen Tiere durchsucht wurden. Dieser Sammelmethode ist es zu verdanken, daß auch eine große Anzahl von den meist vernachlässigten Klein-Polychäten, wie Syllideen, in der Hupfer'schen Sammlung enthalten sind. Die Polychäten Hupfer's wurden im Litoralbezirk fast ausschließlich mit dem Schleppnetz aus Meerestiefen bis zu 30 m heraufgebracht. Der Tatsache, daß bis zu einer solchen Tiefe gesammelt wurde, ist es zuzuschreiben, daß auch Formen, die mehr in tieferem Wasser zu Hause sind, sich in dieser Sammlung vertreten finden, so die Polyodontiden, die Sthenelais-Arten und die verschiedenen Ampharetiden. An die große Hupfer'sche Sammlung schließen sich zwei kleinere, durch gute Erhaltung ausgezeichnete Kollektionen von den Guinea-Inseln an, erbeutet von Prof. R. Greeff und Dr. Arnold Schultze. Nebst einer Anzahl von noch hinzukommenden Einzelfunden bilden diese beiden letztgenannten Sammlungen eine wichtige Ergänzung der Sammlung von Kapitän Hupfer.

Die Gesamtzahl der von mir untersuchten westafrikanischen Arten beträgt 206. Von diesen entfallen 154 auf das tropische Westafrika, 60 auf Südwestafrika, während 9 Arten beiden Faunengebieten gemeinsam sind. Ich habe hierbei für jedes der beiden Gebiete eine der nicht weiter definierbaren Spirorbis-Arten angenommen und die in meinem Material nicht vertretene Eupanthalis tubifex mitgezählt.
Augener comments on the collection as follows (translated from page 69) "The large tropical West African collection, which is one of the most important collections of West African marine animals, is largely made up of Captain Hupfer's enormous haul. This collection, the value of which, in contrast to its size, is impaired by poor preservation, was largely obtained by the named collector bringing suitable objects such as stones covered with algae, bryozoa and mussels, lumps of mussels and the like, home and in the museum were searched by Prof. Michaelsen for the polychaetes and other animals sitting on and in them. It is thanks to this collecting method that a large number of the mostly neglected small polychaetes, such as syllids, are included in Hupfers collection. Hupfer's polychaetes were brought up in the littoral region almost exclusively by trawl from sea depths of up to 30 m. The fact that it was collected to such a depth means that forms that are more at home in deeper water can also be found in this collection, such as the polyodontids, the Sthenelais-species and the various ampharetids"
