Grammatical gender Gender feminine, despite having originally been treated as neuter by Deshayes. The ending -donta comes from the Greek odon or odous (tooth), which is masculine. However, according to Art. 30.1.3. “a genus-group name that is a Greek word latinized with change of ending […] takes the gender normally appropriate to the changed ending or the Latin suffix.
