Taxonomy Ridley's (1884) North Australian record of Schmidt's (1862) Adriatic species Cacospongia mollior is obviously a mistake. Hooper & Wiedenmayer (1994) suggested this to be a specimen of Spongia (Spongia) hispida. Lendenfeld (1889) also extended Schmidt's species to North Australia and the East Indies, as Euspongia irregularis var. mollior, which is likewise assignable to S. hispida. We asume without further study that Baar's (1904) record from Hawaii also concerns this species. Needless to say that these records all need further verification. [details]
