Zu dem Versuche für die Kenntnis der littoralen Polychaeten-Fauna der Magellansländer und der chilenischen Küste die ersten Beiträge zu liefern, wurde ich dadurch veranlasst, dass schnell hintereinander von verschiedenen Seiten an mich die Aufforderung herantrat, ansehnliche Sammlungen polychaeter Anneliden aus diesem Gebiete zu bearbeiten. Das waren die Sammlungen, die Herr Dr. W. MICHAELSEN auf der Hamburger magalhaensischen Sammelreise (1892, 1893), die die schwedische Expedition unter Herrn Dr. NORDENSKJÖLD (1895, 1897) in den Magellansländern und die Herr Dr. PLATE von Mai 1893 bis Mai 1895 an den Küsten Chiles sowie im Magellangebiete und auf Juan Fernandez gemacht hatte. - Es schien lohnend zu sein, die Ergebnisse dieser getrennten Sammelthätigkeit zusammenzufassen. Zu berücksichtigen waren aber auch die Wünsche der einzelnen Sammler, das von ihnen gesammelte Material in Sonderbearbeitungen veröffentlicht zu sehen. So hatte ich der Verwaltung des hamburgischen naturhistorischen Museums, das die magellanische Sammelreise ausgerüstet hatte, bevor ich die anderen Angebote erhielt, zugesagt, die Bearbeitung der mir zu überweisenden Anneliden in der von ihr geplanten umfassenden Bearbeitung der Ergebnisse ihrer Sammelreise zu veröffentlichen. Diese Arbeit ist 1897 erschienen.
