An elongate, pencil-shaped, burrowing heteronemertean that fragments readily is commonly encountered in clam flats and sometimes in sandy beaches of the NewEngland states. It is usually a reddish color, bears a caudal cirrus, and has been routinely recorded as Micrura leidyi. Histological examination of deep red to reddish purple individuals proved them to be intertidal specimens of the normally deep water Tarrhomyos luridus. Living pink to red individuals could be divided into two groups on the basis of color pattern, but were indistinguishable histologically. Comparison with Micrura fasciolata, the type species of the genus, showed morphological differences that do not represent interspecific variation, but indicate a separate generic placement.
