Status The second Encope lineage in the eastern Pacific contains two clades. The genetic distances in all genes between Encope californica and the large clade designated as E. micropora by Coppard & Lessios (2017) was <1.89%, but given that the haplotypes form a monophyletic entity that corresponded with distinctive morphology, Coppard & Lessios (2017) considered it as a separate species.
