Experimental and commercial trawling for prawns off the east coast of southern Africa since 1966 has yielded a number of penaeid species worthy of comment. Trachypenaeus curvirostris (Stimpson) and Penaeus marginatus Randall trawled in relatively shallow water off Natal represent new records for South African waters, while a deep sea species, Plesiopenaeus edwardsianus (Johnson), is recorded in commercial catches from Mocambique waters for the first time. P. marginatus is of particular interest in view of the suggested synonymy of Penaeus terani Kubo with this species (Burkenroad, 1959). Three specimens belonging to the closely related group Metapenaeopsis philippin (Bate), M. coniger (Wood-Mason), M. andamanensis (Wood-Mason), and M. provocatoria (Racek & Dall), were also trawled in deep water off Durban. The relationship between the different 'forms' comprising the group are discussed because of the controversy regarding their taxonomic designation and the three trawled specimens are described as a new species, M. scotti.
