The presumed coelomic cavities, as reflected in body segmentation, of an obturate pogonophoran, Rijta pachyptila ]ones, are compared with those (sensu Southward) of the perviate pogonophorans. The latter are concluded to possess at least two such cavities anterior to the opisthosome, and the former, four cavities in the same region. It is concluded that the relationship of the Pogonophora with the Annelida is more distant than previously thought and that similarly the relationship between the Obturata and the Perviata is more distant. Further, it is concluded that the Perviata departed from the annelid line earlier than the Obturata.
