summary: A general description of the genus Lamellibrachia is given, with special reference to characters that could be of systematic significance. The systematic status of the Vestimentifera is discussed, but it has to be stressed that only preliminary conclusions could be made because the younger developmental stages, which are expected to be of crucial importance, are unknown. The general body plan cannot yet easily be compared with the general structure of other animals, but there is much evidence that the Vestimentifera are aberrant annelids. They have much in common with the Pogonophora, but a close relationship cannot be proven. They have also much in common with the Polychaeta and in principle they could have evolved from a generalized sedentary polychaete. The Vestimentifera are considered a separate class of the phylum Annelida. A description is given of Lamellibrachia luymesi n.sp.
