Homonymy Protaspis Skuja, 1939, is nomenclaturally valid and legitimate for the purposes of the ICN as it was originally regarded as a dinoflagellate, a group traditionally treated as algae.
However, for the purposes of the ICZN Protaspis Skuja, 1939, is a later homomym of the Devonian fish genus Protaspis Bryant, 1933 (and thus illegitimate), the remit under which it now falls as it has been shown to be referable to the Class Thecofilosea (Order Cryomonadida, Family Protaspidae); see Howe et al. (2011).
Protapsa Cavalier-Smith in Howe et al., 2011 was proposed to replace Protaspis Skuja, 1939 under the ICZN [details]
