Nomenclature The variety was erected by Von Lendenfeld for Thiele’s nominotypical variety of Geodia hilgendorfi Thiele (1898: 8, pl. 1 fig. 4, pl. 6 figs. 4a–h). As Thiele described the var. granosa of G. hilgendorfi he automatically created the nominotypical variety without formally naming it. The nominotypical variety has to be named identical to the species name (ICZN art. 47.1), in the present case G. hilgendorfi var. hilgendorfi (q.v.). Von Lendenfeld named it var. typica, but this becomes a junior synonym of the species Geodia hilgendorfi Thiele, 1898. [details]
