Taxonomy Stolasterias was elevated to genus status by Rowe & Gates (1995) who included C. calamaria and C. tenuispina but NOT C. acutispina. Based on phylogeography of Waters & Roy (2003) this makes Stolasterias paraphyletic. This genus is thus considered problematic with prior more stable versions of the name as alternate represenation.  [details]
