Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Corrêa (1948: 247): "The wanting of the dorsal lobe or branch of the parapodia in Lycastis and related genera makes it possible to subdivide the large family Nereidae (or Lycoridae) into two subfamilies, Nereinae and Lycastinae." [details]

Editor's comment Lycastis, the genus name upon with the Lycastinae family name is based, is a junior synonym of Syllis (Typosyllis) in Syllidae [details]

Synonymy Hartman (1959) replaced Lycastinae with the new name Namanereinae (later to be corrected to Namanereidinae) because "Lycastis is thus a synonym of Nereis Linnaeus, 1758." However, this is not correct, and Lycastis is actually a junior synonym of Syllis (Typosyllis). Nevertheless Hartman was correct that Lycastinae and Lycastis in Nereididae were permanently invalid and that a subfamily name based on another genus was needed for the group of Nereididae genera. She chose Namanereinae based on Namanereis, the oldest genus [details]

Taxonomy Subfamily Lycastinae was in use from 1948 when it was erected (Correa, 1948) to about 1959 when Hartman (1959) recognised the synonymy of the type species of the type genus. [details]
