Nomenclature Patella kermes da Costa, 1770 (original name for Crania kermes) was described in Costa's Conchology (1770-1771). This work, as discussed in detail by Petit (2013), is non-binomial, and its names are not available. This is also why Crania kermes does not take precedence over Novocrania turbinata described in 1795. Furthermore, as the name is not attributable to da Costa (as it wasn't published as a binomial), Dall (1920) becomes the author of the Crania kermes as he is the first to use this as a proper binomial.
