Echinoidea (sea urchins)
Goniocidaris (Discocidaris) mikado (aboral)
Description
The primary spines are equipped with conspicuous thorns, at the base structured as thorny discs, and densely covered by thin and sharp spikes. Presumably these are developed to deter the settling of encrusting organisms.
Diameter of test 16 mm, longest spine 36 mm. Sagami Bay, Central Japan, Pacific.
