WoRMS participates in the Global Names Index initiative

WoRMS is contributing to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and the development of international biodiversity informatics science through participating in the Global Names Index (GNI) initiative (www.globalnames.org).
GNI contains over 18 million species names (some names are there many times) and is jointly managed by GBIF and EoL. WoRMS is one of the four GBIF Campaigns and has an MoU to provide information on marine species to EoL. The GNI will use all species names as the links between online biodiversity resources, without distinguishing which are synonyms of misspellings. Quality control and judgement as to which names are correct for a species will continue to be the roles for expert-edited databases like WoRMS.
