Applications for the Ocean Census Species Discovery Awards 2025 are open

Thanks to the contribution of The Nippon Foundation, the Ocean Census is offering financial awards of $5,000 to $20,000 to support marine species discovery around the world. Every discovery counts towards building a better understanding of our ocean’s biodiversity, and we are proud to support taxonomists, marine biologists, and citizen scientists to continue their essential work.
The Awards prioritise the initial step to ‘Discovered’, notably from legacy collections (specimens stored but not analysed in museums and marine research institutes). A species is classified as ‘discovered’ when experts determine—using morphological characteristics and, if necessary, genetic sequencing—that it is new to science. Ongoing and related work to achieve ‘Described’ is welcome but will not be considered in the evaluation of Awards. More information on definitions can be found in the resource section of the website.
Applicants must be members of the Ocean Census Science Network to apply.
