Notocidaris hastata (male and female, aboral)
Description Male (left) and female (right), aboral side: The female releases the eggs through the large gonopores. They are filled with yolk, the nutrition for the growing young. The male, with much smaller genital pores, produces clouds of microscopic sperm, which fertilize the eggs while they are transported by spines and tube feet from the gonopores to the oral side.
Diameter of male 21 mm; Weddell Sea, Antarctica.
