Abstract
The estuarine mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii originates from the American east coast but was transported to Europe with ships. The first European observations date from 1874 in the Netherlands. In 1985, the estuarine mud crab was observed in Belgium, more specifically in the Western Scheldt near Antwerp. The estuarine mud crab is a typical species of fresh and brackish waters and feels at home in the Belgian estuaries. It predates on all types of invertebrates.
