Abstract |
The need to compile a check-list of the European marine molluscs was discussed during the 10th International Malacological Congress (Tübingen, 1989) and a resolution was passed to this effect by the General Assembly of Unitas Malacologica, and Anders Warén (Stockholm) and Philippe Bouchet (Paris) were asked to investigate into its feasability. The acronym CLEMAM (Check List of the European MArine Molluscs) was chosen because of its similarity to CLOFNAM and CLOFETA, the very successful regional checklists of Fishes compiled under the umbrella of UNESCO. In 1994, an ad hoc meeting, funded by Unitas Malacologica, brought together in Paris malacologists representing several regional or national lists of marine molluscs: Considering the data added since 1995, CLEMAM currently contains ca. 15,000 names and over 3,300 valid species. New literature is permanently scanned for new material. Old literature is also being scanned for synonyms and gaps in taxonomical coverage. As of 1999, illustrations of type material of valid species and synonyms are being added to the backbone of taxonomical and nomenclatural information. All native species, benthic or planktonic, and introduced species that have become established are listed in CLEMAM. Old and/or unconfirmed records of non-native species are excluded. CLEMAM records published information only and does not make new taxonomical decisions. When different state-of-the-art taxonomical opinions exist in the recent litterature, the taxonomic editor records what he thinks best reflects the needs of the users of the database. The following manage CLEMAM: Jacques Le Renard (Directeur de Recherches, INRA. E-mail:lerenard@mnhn.fr), Database design and development; Serge Gofas (Curator, MNHN and Lecturer, University of Malaga. E-mail: gofas@mnhn.fr), Taxonomic editor; and Philippe Bouchet (Senior Curator, MNHN. E-mail: bouchet@mnhn.fr), External liaison. We thank the following persons and institutions who have permitted the development of CLEMAM: Unitas Malacologica and its secretary (E. Gittenberger, Leiden, NL) and treasurer (J. van Goethem, Brussels, B) for seed money in the early phases of the project; Società Italiana di Malacologia and R. Giannuzzi-Savelli (Palermo, I), J.-A. Sneli and T. Hoisaeter (Trondheim and Bergen, N), E. Platts, D. Heppell and S. Smith (Edinburgh, UK), and A. Guerra (Vigo, SP) for making available electronic versions of published checklists; A. Warén (Stockholm, S) for input especially on northern and Arctic taxa; staff of MNHN for input at various levels: P. Lozouet, A. Foubert.Within the list genera are listed alphabetically within sub-families although subfamily names have not been included. The on-line database contains more details on phylogeny and nomenclature. |
